Two guns found in stolen car after 30-person brawl ends in police chase

Two guns were found in a stolen car after police were called to a 30-person brawl in Wigan.

Officers were first scrambled to Wood Street in the Newtown area at around 11.40pm on Saturday night (September 3). A huge fight had broken out on the street, police said.

A silver Citroen C3 fled the scene and officers gave chase. The car rammed a police vehicle during the pursuit before it came to a stop on Wood Lane in Standish.

Police found that it had been stolen in the local area earlier that day. Two firearms were found inside the Citroen, leading officers to believe the people inside were 'en-route to commit a criminal offence'.

A hunt to find the occupants of the car is now underway. Police are asking anyone with information to get in touch.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At 11.41pm on Saturday (3 September), police received a report of a large fight happening on Wood Street, Newtown, involving around 30 people. Officers attended and a silver Citroen C3 proceeded to drive off from the scene at speed.

"A pursuit took place resulting in the vehicle ramming a police car before coming to a stop on Wood Lane in Standish. The vehicle was seized and found to have been stolen in Wigan earlier that day.

"Initial enquiries suggest that the occupants of the vehicle were en-route to commit a criminal offence as two firearms were located inside. The occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot before officers arrived and are still outstanding.

"An investigation has been launched to locate the offenders. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 7094 quoting log number 3920 of the 3 September 2022."
