AHMEDABAD: A student from Ahmedabad and another from Gandhinagar have topped the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), 2021-22, fellowship exam. Samarth Patel of Gandhinagar stood first in India while Aditi Singh of Ahmedabad ranked second.

The KVPY is a national fellowship programme in basic sciences which is initiated and funded by the Union government’s department of science and technology. Through the KVPY test, students with talent and aptitude for research are identified and encouraged to take up careers in science. KVPY 2021-22 was organized by IISc Bangalore.

“I am studying in Class 12 and my dream is to pursue a master’s degree in computer science in the US,” Samarth told TOI. “However, if I can’t get to the US, I will try to get admission in an IIT and then go to the US for further research.” Aditi said: “I am in Class 12 and I am going to pursue computer science and intend to get admission in an IIT.” She added: “Currently, I am preparing for JEE. I had been studying for KVPY since I was in Class 8. I could have done better. Nevertheless, I am happy with the results.” Aditi loves playing badminton in her spare time.

Under the fellowship programme, for three years of graduation, Rs 5,000 per month and a contingency amount of Rs 20,000 are given. For two years of postgraduation, Rs 7,000 per month and a contingency amount of Rs 28,000 are given. The fellowship is awarded for a maximum period of five years or up to the pre-PhD examination. tnn
