Two Glenboig sites approved for new North Lanarkshire Council homes

TWO locations in Glenboig are among the further sites to be approved for new houses to drive forward the council’s ambitious plans to deliver 5000 new, affordable homes by 2035.

The local authority’s proposals support the area’s economy by creating new jobs, regenerating communities and transforming town centres into “vibrant multi-use spaces”.

The new sites identified and agreed are the former police station at Glenboig Main Street, which will include approximately six homes with specialist wheelchair provision, and the village’s Garnqueen Farm, where there will be approximately 15 homes for “off the shelf purchase”.

In support of the new properties the council are building, the local authority are also ensuring they “maximise the number of affordable homes available for our tenants”.

They intend to do this through a buy-back scheme, which has already seen 396 homes made available, and the Development Pathfinder approach that allows the council to purchase new-build homes directly from developers.

The sites agreed have been assessed and are for inclusion in the new-build programme, subject to the conclusion of detailed ground investigations, full title checks and appropriate statutory consents.

Other locations approved include the former Cumbernauld Village Primary School and King Street in Wishaw.

Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, convener of the housing and regeneration committee, said: “These additional sites for new build homes reaffirms our commitment to delivering one of the biggest new council house building programmes ever undertaken.

“Improving the lives of our tenants and regenerating our local communities and town centres are the drivers behind our long term ambition and we’re continuing to make significant progress.

“It’s an exciting time for North Lanarkshire and we’re committed to delivering on our ambitions and aspirations for the area and our residents.”
