Two Glasgow pubs have been named among the ‘cosiest’ in the UK

With rain forecast for most of the weekend - and likely much of the rest of the year - it is safe to say we are fast approaching cosy pub season.

Nothing beats shaking off the autumn cold in a welcoming public house, and even better if there is a roasting fireplace inside.

With so many venues to pick from though, it can be hard to know where is actually a good place to dry off and warm up with a hearty meal - and where will leave you feeling cold.

Luckily, Mail on Sunday food critic Tom Parker Bowles and drinks columnist Olly Smith have taken out much of the guesswork.

Together, they've written up an index of the most inviting and intimate pubs across the UK - and Glasgow made the list not once but twice.

When deciding which UK venues to include, Parker Bowles and Smith took a look at a number of factors.

These included the quality of food, the selection of ales and wines on offer, whether dogs were permitted - and, fittingly, anywhere with a roaring fire was awarded extra points.

Regrettably, Parker Bowles chose no Glasgow pubs for his list, instead favouring establishments in Edinburgh and Argyll.

Luckily, Smith made up the deficit by picking two venues in the city: The Ben Nevis and The Belle.

The former is known for its live folk music, but Smith's interest instead lies in its large whisky selection - saying that he "never leaves disappointed".

Meanwhile, he praised high street pub The Belle for its "homely feel" and "good craft beers".

The Ben Nevis

Smith said: “I come here for whisky and I never leave disappointed. Can get very busy but weekdays are calm and splendid for cutting into their excellent list.

"Stone around the place gives a craggy mountain vibe and the folk sessions are fun if you stumble into one.

The Belle

Smith said: "My dear friends Tom and Cathy took me here when they were expecting their first child, and aside from our convivial and celebratory glow, the warm atmosphere of The Belle has stayed with me.

"A fire burning in winter with good craft beers and a homely feel are good reasons to pop in."
