LAMPANG: Two female students at a vocational college in this northern province were killed and three others injured when their car crashed into roadside trees and plunged into a ditch in Muang district early on Sunday.
Police said the accident occurred at about 1.40am when a Honda City slid off Phahon Yothin highway at Ban Mon Khao Kaeo in tambon Phichai before ramming into two roadside trees. The vehicle overturned and plunged into the ditch.
Police, rescue workers and doctors from Lampang Hospital were despatched to the scene.
Two students were found dead in the front seats. They were Chamaiporn Putthawong, 22, the driver, and Pakinee Singkaeo, 22.
Three other girl students in the back seats -- identified only as Wanthana, Thanya and Panida, all 22 -- were injured.
A man who witnessed the accident and called police for help said the Honda City was driving in front of his car at high speed, probably over 100 kilometres per hour, before swerving to the left, ramming into two trees and plunging into the ditch.
According to a police investigation, the five young women were students at a vocational college in Lampang. They were returning from a party to a dormitory in Muang district.
