Two gardai patrolling O'Connell Street with shutters still up on new station

There were a total of two gardai patrolling O'Connell Street this morning with the shutters of a new planned garda station still up.

Dublin Live investigated the number of gardai on the capital's main street on a Monday morning at 11:50am, as concerns rise over anti-social behaviour in the city centre. Our video shows just two offers keeping the streets safe with no sign of any other colleagues.

A new garda station planned for O'Connell Street to tackle drug dealing and anti social crimes remains closed. Justice Minister Helen McEntee previously told a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting the premises on 13A O'Connell Street will be made available to the gardai. There was previously a Citizen's Information office at the site.

Operation Citizen targets antisocial behaviour and promotes garda visibility in the city centre. The operation now run seven days a week rather than at weekends only. Operation Spire targets anti-social behaviour and drug dealing on O'Connell Street itself.

Fine Gael Councillor Ray McAdam previously said that an increased garda presence and a garda station on O'Connell Street would lead to a safer city centre for everyone.

He said: "Coupled with a new permanent Garda office on O’Connell Street these steps will further enhance Garda visibility on our city streets. They will also ensure that public safety is maintained and should better enable the Gardai to target those intent on intimidating people, on being a public nuisance or simply out to cause trouble."
