Two Gardai killed by reckless driver in Dublin remembered by force in moving tribute

Two heroic Gardai who lost their lives on duty in Dublin have been remembered 19 years since the tragedy.

Garda Tony Tighe and Garda Michael Padden died after the driver of a stolen car rammed into their patrol car at nearly 100mph on the Stillorgan dual carriageway on April 14, 2002.

The two officers were trying to clear the road because of the fast-approaching vehicle when it hit their stationary car and killed them instantly.

On the 19th anniversary of the tragedy, An Garda Siochana posted a touching tribute online remembering the two.

The tribute said: "On this day in 2002 Garda Tony Tighe and Garda Michael Padden lost their lives on duty in Dublin 4.

"Due to Covid restrictions, Chief Superintendent Michael McElgunn and Superintendent Tim Burke represented all colleagues in remembering Tony, Michael and their families.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha dílse."
