Two gardai injured as patrol car 'rammed' before driver flees at 'high speed'

A man in his 40’s has been arrested following an incident in Knocknacarra, Co. Galway, where a garda patrol car was rammed.

The incident took place on Wednesday at around 8.30 pm when gardai observed a black Audi A5 car at Altan on the Western Distributor Road.

They activated their blue lights and approached the car. The driver then drove at speed directly towards the marked patrol car.

Gardai had to take evasive action when the driver of the Audi rammed into the front passenger side of the patrol car.

The Audi then fled the scene at high speed out onto Western Distributor Road.

Gardai followed in the direction of the vehicle and were later alerted to an abandoned vehicle in the Knocknacarra area.

Two gardai were injured in the incident but did not require hospitalisation.

Gardai arrested a man in his 40s at Galway Courthouse in connection with endangerment yesterday afternoon.

The man is currently detained at North Western Regional Headquarters in Murrough under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
