Two GAA clubs suspend activities after player tests positive for coronavirus following challenge match

Two GAA clubs have suspended activities after a player tested positive for coronavirus following a challenge match between the teams.

Carlow club Old Leighlin have confirmed that a player has tested positive for Covid-19, and suspended all activities until further notice.

Meanwhile, Laois club Killeshin have shut down until July 27 after one of their teams had 'been in contact' with a confirmed case.

The two clubs met in a challenge match on Monday, with the player who tested positive for the deadly bug involved in the game.

In a statement released this morning, Old Leighlin GAA said: "Old Leighlin GAA can confirm that one of its players has tested positive for Covid-19.

"The club has implemented the GAA guidelines on dealing with a positive case. The public health authorities have instigated the contact tracing process and will assume control of the situation from this point.

"The club has suspended all activities until further notice."

A statement on Killeshin's Facebook page read: "Killeshin GAA would like to let our members know as a precautionary measure we have decided to press pause on all club activities until Monday July 27th.

"This is a precautionary measure, as one of our teams has been in contact with a person who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.

"We in Killeshin GAA feel it sensible and prudent to temporarily close our grounds and suspend both underage and adult group activities.

"We understand that anyone identified by Public Health authorities as a close contact will be tested for COVID-19 We will keep you posted on resumption of activities, and we remind you to respect the privacy of all involved. Thank you."

Killeshin's shut down has also thrown Laois GAA's return to competitive games into doubt, with the club fixed to  play in the pre-season Kelly Cup on Saturday.

Laois club Arles-Kilcruise also faced Old Leighlin in a challenge game last Sunday, and are understood to be seeking advice from the GAA.

Carlow GAA have been contacted for comment.
