Two four-year-old boys killed by gunfire in the US in less than 48 hours

Two four-year-old boys have been killed by guns in the United States in less than 48 hours.

The first died after accidentally shooting himself in the face with a gun belonging to his father.

Evan Sun died in hospital on Sunday, which was Mother’s Day in the US.

Lucas County’s coroner said in a statement: “All the evidence and investigation points to the fact that the child shot himself in the face after finding an unsecured weapon.

"The child’s father is an Ohio State Trooper and this was his 'back-up' weapon that he carries. The death is ruled an Accident.”

Evan was rushed to intensive care at Toledo Children’s Hospital, in Ohio, but died at 12.52pm.

The second boy, Jeremiah Ward, was found with life-threatening injuries in a parking lot in Peoria, Illinois.

Police went to the scene after reports of 22 shots being fired.

He was rushed to hospital but died less than an hour later at 6.36pm.

A statement from Peoria County Coroner’s Office said: “How many times the toddler was shot is undetermined at this time.”

An autopsy is planned for Tuesday and police are investigating the shooting.

This comes as statistics showed that 209 children have been injured in gunfire in the US in 2019 so far, some fatally, according to CNN.
