Two fires at Redcliffe pub in one day thought to be deliberate

Police are investigating two "suspicious" fires in a derelict Redcliffe pub which took place yesterday.

The former site of the Bell in Prewett Street was damaged by fires, believed to be deliberate, at 9.14am and then 4.58pm on Sunday, June 30.

An Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman said: "Fire crews called for police support at the scene just after 5.15pm.

"They reported the fire as suspicious. It's currently not safe for fire investigators or police to enter the building to establish the cause of the fire."

Around 30 firefighters descended on Redcliffe after the huge blaze erupted yesterday evening.

There are reports a person was seen entering the Bell before the fire broke out.

Black smoke could be seen billowing out over Bristol's skyline by people living miles away.

An Avon Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "At 9.14am, crews from Temple and Bedminster fire stations were called to a fire on the ground floor of a property on Prewett Street in Redcliffe.

"On arrival, two firefighters in breathing apparatus used one high-pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire. The cause is thought to be deliberate.

"At 4.58pm, crews from Temple, Bedminster, Hicks Gate and Kingswood fire stations were called to a fire within the roof space of a property on Prewett Street in Redcliffe.

"On arrival, four firefighters in breathing apparatus used two 45mm jets and one high-pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire. They also used a turntable ladder to monitor the situation. Police were also in attendance and the cause us thought to be deliberate."
