Two female gardai assaulted at checkpoint in Co Kilkenny

Two female gardai were assaulted at a checkpoint in Co Kilkenny over the weekend.

One officer is believed to have been bitten in the attack at a Operation Fanacht check in the village of Callan on Sunday morning.

Both gardai suffered minor injuries and are now thought to be self-isolating after being in close contact with the attacker.

A man was arrested in connection with the attack and is due in court on Tuesday.

A garda spokesperson told The Irish Daily Mirror: "At approximately 00:10am, May 3rd 2020, Gardaí in Kilkenny arrested a male, aged in his late teens on public order offences.

"When stopped at a checkpoint, the male became aggressive and assaulted two Gardaí.

"The Gardaí received minor injuries during the course of the incident.

"The vehicle was searched and a quantity of suspected cannabis was found."

The man was arrested and taken to Kilkenny Garda Station.

He appeared in Kilkenny District Court today, May 5, 2020.
