Two men have been killed in a light aircraft crash near Castle Howard in North Yorkshire.

The pilot and a passenger both died in the crash, police said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Police closed roads around the stately home in Ryedale and told drivers to avoid the area to allow access for the emergency services.

Police and ambulances were called to the scene at about 10.40am after receiving numerous calls from members of the public.

The crash occurred in a field between Castle Howard, a popular tourist destination, and the A64. An air ambulance was sent to the crash site.

A North Yorkshire police spokesman said: “Roads in the area have been closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident and members of the public are advised to keep away from the area.”

As many as 20 firefighters were at the scene. They set up a foam blanket around the aircraft in case it caught fire, a spokesman for the North Yorkshire fire service said.

“We have sent three appliances and one incident support unit with its own appliance,” the spokesman said. “They are assisting police and have set up the external foam equipment around the perimeter.”
