Two elderly women were subject to a terrifying ordeal when a thief opened the passenger door of their car and stole a handbag full of money.

The women, who are believed to in their 70s and 80s, were driving down Culmore Road in Palmerstown at around 2pm on Monday afternoon.

They are understood to have been returning from the local post office where one of the women had withdrawn a substantial sum of money, Dublin Live reports.

It is believed a man opened the passenger door of the car when the women stopped the car and screamed at them as he pulled the handbag from the lady in the passenger seat.

A garda spokesman told Dublin Live they are investigating the incident.

He said: "Gardaí are investigating a suspected burglary from a vehicle that occurred at approximately 2pm today 8 July 2019 on Culmore Road, Palmerstown.

"A sum of cash and other items were understood to have being taken. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."
