Two Edinburgh doctors test positive for coronavirus following Italy trip

Two Edinburgh doctors have tested positive for coronavirus, it has been reported.

The pair are consultants who are used by the Spire Murrayfield hospital on Corstorphine Road, with a third medic understood to have tested negative for the virus.

The Edinburgh Evening News reports the two doctors tested positive for Covid-19 following a skiing trip to Italy.

Spire said they had not been to the hospital following their return to the UK and have not seen patients.

It comes as the number of coronavirus cases in the NHS Lothian area rises to 8, with a total of 36 across Scotland.

The Scottish Government is also fast-tracking video consultations with GPs to minimise the risk of the virus spreading.

In other developments, the World Health Organisation declared that Covid-19 was officially classified as a pandemic on Wednesday.

Staff at the Spire Hospital have been informed that the medics have not been on the hospital grounds following the positive test. The two consultants who tested positive are not Spire staff members.

It is a private facility which offers a number of medical services and is not part of NHS Lothian.
