Two east end sports clubs awarded grants to help buy new equipment

Two sports clubs in the east end of Glasgow have been awarded grant funding by the City Council’s area partnership to help purchase new equipment.

Easterhouse Football Academy will receive £1400 to help obtain 28 Scottish Football Association (SFA) coaching badges, face masks and hand sanitiser to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Glasgow East Juniors Rugby Football Club, which is based in Baillieston, has been granted £5011 for equipment, PPE, Covid training and marketing materials.

The applications were brought before the Baillieston area parentship committee on Tuesday morning.

A council officer explained: “Easterhouse Football Academy are looking for funding to obtain SFA online coaching badges for 28 people and purchase face masks and sanitiser.

“The amount they are asking for is £2800 and Baillieston AP has been asked to consider an award of £1400 which is the recommended for approval today.

“There’s 138 children participating in this organisation including the 28 coaches.”

Members agreed to approve the funding for the academy. Another application for £5011 for various items at Glasgow East Juniors was then discussed by the committee.

Concerns were raised about the £600 required for the covid training and review. The organisation confirmed it was needed to buy in services of a consultant to advise them on how to move about their premises in their safe manner.

Councillor Philip Charles said: “This is to do with covid and health and safety which should always be made a priority.

“I am kind of concerned as to what kind of advice this is. I am torn on it as it is Covid related but I quite like the idea of them giving us a brief on how this £600 would be spent as it seems like a lot of money to me for someone to give a brief.”

Members decided to grant the full funding access and to request a presentation from the organisation on how this money will be spent.

They will also advise that covid training may be available from Glasgow Life.
