Two dogs and owner trapped in darkness on steep quarry ledge hauled to safety in dramatic rescue

Two dogs and their owner trapped in darkness on a steep ledge in a quarry were hauled to safety in a dramatic rescue.

Pictured above is one of the dogs Lunar, who Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said was 'a bit unsure' about going into a special rescue bag but was 'much happier' on solid ground.

Both dogs and their owner, a man, were unhurt.

The rescue on Thursday night near Newhey in Rochdale involved 22 members of the mountain rescue team and took more than two hours.

They responded to reports of a man 'stuck on a ledge with his two dogs' in a quarry.

One rescuer abseiled down to reach them and they were hauled back to the top of a crag.

The mountain rescue team said in a Facebook post they received 'dual alerts from both Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service'.

"We soon had local team members on scene, who were able to locate the male and establish that, although he was cragfast (stuck) on a large ledge, he was uninjured and his dogs were also fine.

"A team member abseiled down to assess the scene and the decision was made to haul the casualties to the top of the crag.

"That team member was then hauled back up with one of the dogs, followed by the casualty and the other dog, who was accompanied by a second rescuer.

"Pictured is Lunar, who was a bit unsure about going in the bag, but was much happier once she was back on solid ground.

"We dropped the male and the canines back at their car so they could get back home and warm up."

The rescue involved 22 members of personnel and took, in total, two hours, 15 minutes.

Oldham MRT added: "As a rescue service we are happy to assist anyone in distress.

"We don't judge our casualties and respectfully ask our followers (on social media) to act in a similar manner."
