Two dead, three hurt in South L.A. shootings

Dec. 28--In a violent day in South Los Angeles, two people were killed and three injured in two separate shootings that police believe were gang-related.

Shortly before 7 a.m. on Saturday, a man in his 20s was walking westbound on West 82nd Street toward Vermont Avenue when a suspect in dark clothing shot him, then fled, said LAPD Lt. Jeff Nolte. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

At around 4:30 p.m., two groups of people were arguing in a parking lot behind an apartment on South Figueroa at West 88th Place, about a mile away from the first shooting. A man pulled out a handgun and started firing, Nolte said.

One male victim died at the hospital, while a woman and two men are in stable condition.

Detectives are interviewing the surviving victims as well as neighbors and are seeking surveillance video of the incident. The suspect, who was wearing dark clothing, fled on foot, Nolte said.

There were 27 homicides within a mile of the apartment building in the last 12 months, according to the L.A. Times' Homicide Report.

Anyone with information should call South Bureau Homicide at 213.485.4341.
