Two men have died after a light plane crashed into a paddock north of Canberra.
The pilot and passenger of the Cessna fixed-wing aircraft both died at the scene. They have not been formally identified.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to a property on Tallagandra Lane in Sutton at about 4.30pm on Tuesday in response to the crash.
The spokeswoman said the plane is believed to have taken off from Canberra Airport at about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
Officers from the Hume Police District have established a crime scene and have started inquires.
Essential Energy has confirmed the occupants of the plane were undertaking an aerial inspection of the company's electricity network before it crashed.
"Essential Energy's thoughts remain with the families, friends and colleagues of the two people who died," the company's statement read.
The company added it would not provide further comment while the police investigation was under way.
"Authorities are currently investigating the incident and Essential Energy is providing full support," the statement read.
"It would not be appropriate for us to provide any further information while the police investigation is under way."
A report will be prepared for the coroner and police are expected to address the media about the incident on Wednesday morning.
Police and RFS crews were expected to remain at the scene of the crash for several hours on Tuesday evening. People were being turned away from the scene further down Tallagandra Lane.
Essential Energy maintains 95 per cent of NSW's power poles and wires. According to its website, workers regularly undertake aerial inspections of the network.
The cause of the crash is not yet known.
