Two crashes within less than half an hour on a major Melbourne freeway have left two dead and brought morning traffic to a standstill.
A woman was struck by a truck after pulling over and getting out of her car on the Monash Freeway near Darling Street in Glen Iris at about 8.10am on Friday.
The woman died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
The truck driver stopped shortly after and is assisting police as they work to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.
The freeway was closed for hours between High Street and Warrigal Road but reopened before midday.
Motorists had earlier reported traffic was banked up for kilometres, with trucks and cars forced to detour.
About 20 minutes before the Glen Iris incident, a motorbike rider crashed into a pole on the Monash Freeway further southeast at Doveton.
He also died at the scene despite the efforts of first responders.
