Authorities have established a crime scene after a house fire in Tallarook north of Melbourne. (AAP)

Two people have perished in a house fire in central Victoria.

The home at Tallarook, 88 kilometres north of Melbourne, was destroyed in a blaze late on Sunday night.

Police initially reported two occupants, believed to be a mother and child, were unaccounted for and discovered their bodies in the charred remains of the home on Monday morning.

They are yet to be formally identified.

No other occupants were believed to be present at the time of the fire, which has been deemed non-suspicious.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
