Two dead as armed police swoop streets amid reports of gunshots fired in south London

Two people have died following reports of gunshots being fired in London on Sunday night (October 30). Armed officers were called to Railton Road, in Brixton, just before 8pm.

Paramedics, as well as an air ambulance, attended the scene where two men were found injured. They were both pronounced dead a short time later, the Met Police said.

A major investigation has since been launched with a number of roads closed in the area as enquiries are carried out. No arrests have been made in relation to the incident, with formal identification of the deceased still to take place.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Sunday night: "Police were called at about 19:50hrs on Sunday, 30 October to reports of gunshots heard on Railton Road, SE24. Officers, including firearms officers, are in attendance along with the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance.

"Two men were found injured at the location. Despite the efforts of emergency services, they were both pronounced dead at the scene. The nature of their injuries has not been confirmed at this time.

"Their next of kin are yet to be informed and we await formal identification. Post-mortem examinations will be held in due course.

"A number of roads in the area are closed and crime scenes are in place. At this stage, there have been no arrests and enquiries continue. Local residents will see an enhanced police presence in the area and are advised to speak with officers if they have any information."
