Two men are dead after a catastrophic truck crash on a major highway involving a fuel tanker and another heavy vehicle.

Both vehicles caught fire after colliding head-on in the early hours of Thursday morning on the D'Aguilar Highway at Nukku, northwest of Brisbane.

The drivers - men aged in their 30s and 50s - sustained critical injuries and were treated by paramedics, but died at the scene.

Up to 13 fire crews attended the accident before the final team departed about 1.30pm, the Queensland Fire Department said.

Authorities revoked a Public Safety Preservation Act declaration just before 4pm.

A 1km exclusion zone boundary had been established, encompassing the D'Aguilar Highway, the northern end of Nukku Road and southern end of Nukku Boundary Road.

Police urged motorists to avoid the area and drive with care.

Anyone with dashcam footage of the trucks should contact authorities.

The D'Aguilar Highway links the major arterial Bruce Highway near Sunshine Coast's Caboolture with the Bunya Highway in Kingaroy.
