Two people dead after 4WD crashes off road into culvert north of Albany

The car left the road and crashed down an embankment before hitting a culvert.

A man and a woman have been killed in a car crash in the town of Lower King in Western Australia's south.

The victims were travelling in a 4WD north of Albany in the Great Southern region when it is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle and left the road.

The car crashed down an embankment before hitting a concrete drain on the northern side of Norwood Road, near the intersection of Hillview Rise.

The 4WD had been full of dozens of used car batteries, many of which were thrown from the vehicle when it crashed.

It is believed the pair were killed instantly.

Emergency services were notified at 8:20am after a passer-by discovered the crash, with police, St John Ambulance and fire crews attending the scene.

"Inside the vehicle were a woman and a man who were both non responsive … sadly, the woman and man died at the scene," WA Police Acting Sergeant Mick Slaughter said.

Police said Major Crash officers were investigating the accident.

"Investigators would like to speak to anyone who was driving in the area this morning or saw the [vehicle] prior to the crash," Acting Sergeant Slaughter said.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Police are investigating a separate incident in the state's north where a man was killed overnight after he was hit by a car in the Kimberley town of Fitzroy Crossing.

It is thought he may have been sleeping on the road at the time.
