Two dead after Mini Cooper plunges into Lydd river in middle of night

Two people have died after their car veered off the road and plunged into a river.

Officers were called after the grey Mini Cooper crashed at 3.40am on Saturday in Lydd, Kent Police said.

Three people were freed from the car by emergency services near Dengemarsh Road and taken to hospital.

But a man and a woman, both in their 20s and from the Maidstone area, died from their injuries.

Their next of kin have been informed.

Another man has been discharged from hospital after sustaining minor injuries, police said.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are working to establish the circumstances of the collision and are urging anyone who saw the Mini in the moments leading up to the incident, or who have dash cam footage from the area around the time, to contact them."
