Two dead after car plunges into Bristol's Feeder Canal

A police investigation is underway after a two people died when their car crashed into a canal in Bristol.

The incident occurred at around 6PM on Sunday night, in an industrial area close to the city centre.

Avon and Somerset Police said the car was driving down Short Street before the crash, which runs perpendicular to the city's Feeder Canal.

The car failed to stop at a junction with the road which runs alongside the canal, instead going straight over and crashing through a barrier before plunging into the water.

Emergency services attended the scene immediately and launched a major rescue operation, but the car's passengers had died before they could be rescued.

Police have not formally identified the bodies, but have said that the two victims are adults. There is no explanation yet for what could have caused the incident.

Avon and Somerset Police is appealing for information, asking business owners in the area for any CCTV footage they may have of the incident, and requesting that anyone with information come forward.

A number of road closures were in place late on Sunday night, while emergency services continue to investigate and attempt to retrieve the car from the canal.
