Two dead after being hit by train trying to free trapped dog from tracks

Two people have died after being hit by a train while trying to free their dog who had become trapped on the tracks.

The two people had been walking their dog along the railroad bridge in Ventura, California, when they spotted a train approaching.

After darting from the bridge they realised their dog had become trapped and was struggling to break free.

It's reported they then ran back to the tracks themselves and desperately tried to release their pet.

Sadly all three were hit by the train and killed.

Images from the scene show the train stopped on the track as police investigate.

Two stretchers can also be seen alongside the tracks.

Ventura County Sheriff officials have ruled the deaths as an accident, reports abc7.

In March of this year a man died after jumping into a river to rescue a dog that fell in during a walk.

The man and a woman, aged 20, entered the River Weaver in Northwich, Cheshire, after one of the dogs they were walking fell into the water.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were scrambled to the scene, shortly before 5am on Saturday, to find the woman hanging on to the side of a steep embankment.

Firefighters put a ladder alongside the embankment and helped her to get out of the water and on to dry land, Cheshire Police said.

The woman was then assessed by paramedics before being taken to hospital in an ambulance and later discharged.

An extensive search of the river and its banks was conducted for the 21-year-old man

It involved a police helicopter and underwater rescue team and a Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service rescue boat and swift water rescue team.

At around 2.10pm, the underwater rescue team found a body in the river, believed to be that of the 21-year-old man.
