Two-Day Afghanistan Peace Conference Concludes in Makkah

The two-day Afghan peace conference concluded its proceedings in Makkah on Wednesday. (SPA)

The two-day international conference of Muslim ulemas on peace in Afghanistan, co-hosted by the Saudi cities of Jeddah and Makkah, concluded on Wednesday.

Organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the "International Conference of Muslim Scholars on Peace and Stability in the Republic of Afghanistan” kicked off on Tuesday in Jeddah and concluded its proceedings in Makkah on Wednesday.

Addressing the closing session, OIC Secretary General Dr. Yusuf bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, for their efforts to hold the conference.

He also congratulated the Afghan ulema on the success of the conference.

For their part, the participants condemned fighting between Afghan factions, calling on them to agree to a ceasefire and peace,

They lauded the Afghan government initiative to kick off direct and peaceful negotiations without preconditions and recognize the Taliban as a political party.

The conference called on the Taliban movement to respond positively to Kabul’s call to shun violence, stop fighting and sit at a negotiating table to discuss peace and security without preconditions.
