The County Durham schools closed due to the coronavirus outbreak

A number of County Durham schools have been forced to close due to staff sickness.

Durham County Council's website states a number of schools have closed or are partially shut due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Here are the latest school closures in County Durham.

The Government has said all schools will close from March 20 until further notice.

The school is closed until Monday, April 20 due to a number of staff being off sick.

The school is closed to high risk pupils until Thursday, March 19.

Newker Primary School, Chester-le-Street

The school will partially close on Wednesday, March 18 and reopen on Monday, March 23.

Elemore School, Pittington

Due to staff shortages due to sickness absence, the school has been partially shut until Monday, March 23.

One group will be affected per day, with parents provided information individually.

Burnside Primary School, Stanley

The nursery and two year old provision will be closed until further notice.

They are unable to provide the provision due to low staff numbers.

Bullion Lane Primary School, Chester-le-Street

Due to 23 members of staff with underlying health problems, the school will close on Thursday until Monday, March 30.

The closures come as a teaching union has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson demanding schools are closed “at least for some time and at least in some areas”.

The letter from Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, joint general secretaries of the National Education Union, said that they intend to advise all members who are in various vulnerable categories outlined by the Government, or those caring for people in them, to “stop attending schools and colleges from next Monday at the latest. Some will do so earlier”.

It added: “We also assume that the children of parents with those conditions should also avoid school or college.

“This will make the running of schools all the more complicated.

“Given your failure to release modelling comparing different scenarios of school closures, we are now forced to call on you to close schools, at least for some time and at least in some areas.”
