Two counties not on track to leave lockdown on December 1 as Covid cases rise

Concerns have been raised in recent days by health chiefs about Ireland's coronavirus battle as cases continue to rise.

While there had been encouraging signs that Level Five restrictions were working to curb the spread of the virus, experts are warning that worrying trends have started to emerge.

Speaking this week deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said: “We are concerned the positive trajectory we have been reporting in recent weeks has at best stalled and is in fact deteriorating."

"One of the biggest single detriments to our progress, is an overt focus on where we might be in six weeks' time. We have to focus on today and tomorrow and what people are doing individually.

"We have no idea where we'll be in two weeks' time at this point. It could get much better, it could get much worse.

Ireland is just over halfway through its second lockdown with restrictions set to be lifted on December 1.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has signalled that the plan will be for the country to be under Level 3 restrictions once the lockdown ends however a nationwide lifting of restrictions may not be possible.

Currently two counties, Limerick and Donegal are showing higher numbers of cases compared to other counties across the country.

As of Monday, both counties have a 14 day incidence per 100,000 rate well over the national average of 120.4.

Limerick's incidence currently sits at 226.8 while Donegal's is more than double the national rate sitting 269.5.

On Monday a further 456 cases were confirmed bringing the total here to 68,356.

Ireland's death toll now stands at 1,984.
