Two classes shut after several Covid-19 cases confirmed at Irish primary school

Two classes have been shut after several Covid-19 cases were confirmed at an Irish school.

Senior Infants and 1st class year groups at the school in the west of the country moved to remote learning from Monday.

A deep clean has also been carried out in the building.

Officials said that the two classes will not be attending school on the advice of the HSE.

However, all other classes will continue to attend as normal.

An urgent letter has been sent to parents and guardians explaining the situation.

It reads: "The school has been working closely with the HSE and Public Health over the weekend.

"As part of the risk assessment any close contacts within the school have been identified, contacted and advised of the next steps.

"Deep cleaning has also been carried out at the school.

"The HSE has advised that Senior Infants and 1st class move to remote learning from Monday, 15th March.

"The school is to remain open for all other classes.

"The school will continue to follow the HSE's guidance and strictly adhere to the school's Covid plan."

It comes after multiple Covid-19 cases were also confirmed at a school in Co Wexford.

Four separate infections were reported in a year group at Colaiste Bride in Enniscorthy up to last Friday.

A letter sent to parents and guardians on March 11 was among several issued last week.

However, the school principal explained that the HSE is satisfied these infections can be attributed to "social interactions outside school".

Nonetheless, any children at the school who develop symptoms have been asked to self-isolate and restrict their movements before contacting their GP.

The letter sent to parents reads: "A confirmed case of Covid-19 in your child’s school has been notified to the Department of Public Health HSE South East.

"A public health risk assessment has been undertaken and the parents of any children deemed to be close contacts of the confirmed case have been contacted and advised accordingly.

"If, at any time, your child develops any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 infection (such as a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or more, a new cough, loss or changed sense of taste or smell, shortness of breath or an existing breathing condition that has recently become worse, sore throat, headaches or diarrhoea), please do not send your child to school, contact your GP and begin restricting your child’s movements, as per public health advice.

"If your child is being sent for a Covid test by their GP, due to symptoms, you should try to isolate your child from other members of the household and all other members of the household need to restrict their movements while awaiting the results of this test.

"Isolating from others means they should stay in a room, on their own, with a window open for ventilation. They should avoid contact with other people. Depending on the age of a child, a parent may need to isolate with them."
