
Hobart has taken the title as Australia oldest capital city, edging ahead of Adelaide for the first time since 2020.
The Tasmanian capital boasts a median age of 39.3 years, slightly above its South Australian counterpart at 39.2.
Darwin retained its title as the youngest city, with a median age of 34.8.
The data was revealed in a study published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday, which extended to regional locations.
Coastal retirement destinations tended to house the oldest populations, led by Tea Garden on the NSW coast at 66.5 years.
The Canberra suburb of Acton, home to Australian National University, posted the nation's youngest median age at 21.1 years.
The data also showed Hobart and Adelaide were the two capitals where women outnumbered men the most.
Darwin was the only capital with more men than women.
Australia has been ranked the 77th oldest country by median age in the world, according to data from the Central Intelligence Agency.

Monaco is the oldest at 56.9, with others in the top 10 including Japan, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Australia's median age has increased over the past 30 years, rising from 33.4 in 1994, to 38.3 in June 2024.
About 17 per cent of the nation's population is aged 65 years or over.
Fertility rates have also declined over the same period, to 1.45 babies per woman.
