Two children rescued in Devon after drifting 600ft from shore in rough seas

Two children were pulled from the sea after drifting out 600ft from the shore during rough seas.

The rescue operation to save the youngsters was launched around the mouth of the River Axe in East Devon.

It involved two helicopters being sent to search for the children at around 6:30pm.

The young pair, their ages unknown, were pulled out from the water around 180 metres off shore and rushed to A&E, reports Devon Live .

A spokesperson for the Beer Coastguard Rescue Team said: "One of our rescue officers was first on scene and conned Lyme lifeboat on to the two casualties and they quickly recovered them into the lifeboat.

"Both were cold and one had swallowed sea water.

"It was decided to lower the paramedic from the helicopter onto the lifeboat to check them over.

"As it was too rough on the shore for the lifeboat to land, and due to their condition, it was decided to winch both into the helicopter and land on the beach where the HART team and doctor onboard the air ambulance could check them out.

"It was decided both needed to be taken to A&E via land ambulance. We wish them a quick recovery."

A witness told Devon Live: "At approximately 6.30pm this evening we noticed an RNLI lifeboat circling off Seaton seafront, then [RNLI] rescue helicopter arrived and made several attempts to winch people from the lifeboat.

"The helicopter then put down on the end of Seaton beach and was met by two ambulances, coastguard and police and also the Devon Air Ambulance.

"Just heard it was two kids jumping off the sea wall and swept out to sea, both on the way to hospital."

It is the latest in a string of incidents at sea in Devon.

In the past two days around eight incidents have seen coastguard, paramedics and police respond with urgency. Yesterday a 'critical incident' was declared around Torbay.
