The youngsters' whereabouts was a mystery for more than half an hour but thankfully they were eventually located further along the beach.

Police confirmed the pair were found at 3.20pm and officers "reunited them with their father".

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "At around 2.45pm on Sunday, May 2, we received a report that two children, aged 9 and 6, were missing on Formby Beach.

"Police officers and National Trust rangers conducted a thorough search of the area, and the Coastguard was informed.

"The children were thankfully found safe and well at around 3.20pm and reunited with their family."

The police's North Sefton twitter account also tweeted a picture of an officer on a quad bike and said: "North Sefton local police officers patrolling Formby Beach on quad bikes found 2 missing children and reunited them with their father this afternoon with help from #NationalTrust rangers and #RNLI lifeguards."

Police say if your child, or someone you know, is missing, please don’t hesitate to contact police.

Always call 999 if the missing person is in immediate danger, is a young child or vulnerable to harm.
