Young family of four including girls aged 1 and 3 killed in horror Highlands crash

Two young children have been killed along with their parents in a horror car crash in Scotland.

The girls, aged one and three, their dad, 25, and their 26-year-old mum who was driving were pronounced dead at the scene near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands.

The tragedy happened when the Mini Cooper they were travelling in collided with a Ford Fiesta yesterday.

All four family members were pronounced dead at the scene on the A82 by Hillfarm, Torlundy at around 5.30pm on Thursday.

Specially trained officers are supporting their relatives.

The female driver of the Ford Fiesta, 56, was taken to hospital with what was described as serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The road was closed for about 11 and a half hours after the crash.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Kate Forbes, MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, tweeted: "This is extremely sad news. Thinking of the families and friends who are dealing with the shock of all of this."

In a post on Facebook, local councillor Andrew Baxter wrote: "It's terrible news to hear of loss of life on our roads.

"Even more so when tragedy hits a young family like this."

Superintendent Simon Bradshaw, said: "I can sadly confirm that four people have died - a female driver, 26, a male front seat passenger, 25, and two children - both girls aged three and one.

"All four were travelling in a green Mini Cooper.

"Further details will be confirmed in due course but I can confirm that they were a family.

“Specialist officers have been deployed to provide support to their relatives at this extremely difficult time.”

He added: "Every loss of life on our roads is a tragedy but the impact on families, friends and entire communities after an incident like this cannot be underestimated.

“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been involved or affected.

"An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances leading to this tragedy and it would be wrong for me to speculate on the cause at this time.”

He earlier said: “Enquiries are continuing into the incident and I would ask anyone with information or dashcam footage who has not yet come forward to please get in touch.”

A statement by Police Scotland earlier said: "Police Scotland are appealing for information following a fatal road crash on the A82 by Hillfarm, Torlundy around 5.30pm on Thursday, 20 February.

"Emergency services were made aware of a two car crash involving a Mini Cooper and a Ford Fiesta.

"A 26-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man, a 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old girl who were in the Mini Cooper were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 56-year-old woman, was taken to Bedford Hospital, Fort William with what was described as serious but non-life threatening injuries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 2942 of 20 February.

This tragedy came after two people died and seven people were injured in an eight vehicle pile-up in east London yesterday.

A man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s were pronounced dead at the scene.

Six people were rushed to hospital following the London crash, including three people who had be freed from their vehicle by the London Fire Brigade.

This shocking incident happened on a busy road in Romford at around 1.20pm on Thursday.

Earlier in the week, two men and a woman were also killed in a horror head-on crash between a small car and a lorry in Northamptonshire.

The victims of the triple fatal collision on Tuesday were travelling in a red Vauxhall Corsa and all three died at the scene on the A43 between Northampton and Kettering.

The Corsa collided with an oncoming white Volvo Tipper lorry near to the Sywell Range at about 2pm, said Northamptonshire Police.

The three victims were the only occupants of the Corsa.
