A 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman from Berkshire have been charged with preparing for acts of terrorism in the UK.

Mohammed Rehman, from Reading, and Sana Ahmed Khan, from Wokingham, were arrested last Thursday by officers from the West Midlands counter-terrorism unit in a joint operation with the south-east counter-terrorism unit.

They will appear before Westminster magistrates court in London on Friday. Rehman has been further charged with possession of articles for terrorist purposes.

Police said the pair were detained to “safeguard public safety” but did not pose any imminent threat. Their home addresses were searched by officers last week.

Rob Wilson, the Conservative MP for Reading East, said he had been briefed by police on the arrests. He told getreading.co.uk: “I’d like to reassure my constituents that the police in Reading are on top of the situation and are working closely with counter-terrorist colleagues from the Midlands.

“Whilst it would not be right for me to comment about this in detail at this stage, I have every confidence in the actions taken so far.”
