Two charged over NSW bushfire grant fraud

Police have charged a man and woman in northern NSW with making fraudulent claims worth $75,000. (AAP)

A man falsely claimed he lost more than 3000 head of cattle in last summer's catastrophic bushfires and claimed an insurance payout and government grants, police will allege.

The 34-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were arrested in Lismore in northern NSW on Thursday and charged over the alleged scheme.

Police say the pair made over $75,000 in fraudulent claims.

The man attempted to claim compensation through an insurance company and also applied for several NSW government grant schemes for bushfire assistance, police allege.

The man has been charged with 14 offences including dishonestly obtaining property by deception. The woman faces 14 fraud and weapons charges.

Police seized collectible coins, weapons and documentation at the same East Lismore property where the man was arrested.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree said in a statement it was "devastating to see some elements of society take advantage of the system that was put into place to support those who needed it".

Police had been investigating the alleged fraud since June.

The arrests come after eight people were charged in Greater Sydney and the Southern Highlands in early December over alleged bushfire grant fraud.

The man and woman were refused bail and will appear at Lismore Local Court on Friday.
