Two casualties taken to hospital after crash closes busy Eccles road

Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash on a busy road in Eccles.

Police closed the A57 Liverpool Road between Legh Street and George Street, following a crash involving two cars near to the Tesco Esso fuel station.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 4.40pm on Saturday afternoon (June 19), with firefighters and paramedics also in attendance.

A man and a woman were taken to hospital by ambulance.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 4.40pm on Saturday (June 19), firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving two cars on Liverpool Road, Eccles.

“Two fire engines from Stretford and Salford fire stations, as well as the Technical Rescue Unit from Leigh, quickly attended the incident.

“A man and a woman were conveyed to hospital by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters helped make the area safe before handing over to Greater Manchester Police.

“GMFRS crews were in attendance for around 50 minutes.”

Drivers were urged to avoid the area following the collision, while bus services were diverted.

In a post on Twitter following the crash, a Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson added: "A57 Liverpool Rd, Eccles is closed near to Cawdor St (outside Tesco).

"This is due to a road traffic collision. Emergency services are dealing with the incident.

"Delays are expected and Bus services will be diverted. Please check with your operator."

The accident has since been cleared, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.

GMP was approached for comment.
