Two cars crash off the M9 after heavy rain hits Edinburgh and Lothians

At least two cars have crashed off the road on the M9 after heavy rain hit Edinburgh and the Lothians.

One of the vehicles rolled onto its roof in the two separate incidents near Junction 3 of the motorway, to the south of Bo'ness.

Police Scotland's road policing unit warned drivers to keep their speeds down amid the downpour on Saturday.

Both vehicles ended up on the hard shoulder, with firefighters called out to help the driver of a red hatchback which had skidded onto the grass embankment.

Officers said the occupants of both vehicles were lucky to have only suffered minor injuries.

Sharing a picture of the second crash, the road policing unit tweeted: "Same location (M9 J3), heavy downpour of rain & some drivers still not adjusting their driving manner/speed to take account of the surface water.

"Again lucky no serious injuries. The speed limit is not a target, it's the maximum permitted speed."

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) have warning flooding is possible in the Lothians over the weekend, with West Lothian thought to be the most at risk.

They said: "Persistent and at times heavy rain will spread across parts of central and southern Scotland on Saturday and persist through until Sunday.

"This may lead to surface water flooding and flooding from small watercourses, with western areas being most at risk.

"Built up areas are at greater risk where possible impacts could include: flooding of low-lying land, roads, properties and disruption to travel."
