Two Cardiff libraries will close for six months so they can be refurbished

Two libraries in north Cardiff will be shut for around six months from the New Year so they can be turned into "wellbeing hubs".

Rhydypennau Library, on Llandennis Road, Cyncoed , and Whitchurch Library, on Park Road, will close at 7pm on Tuesday, January 7, to allow the internal and external work to take place.

They are due to reopen as community hubs in the summer of 2020.

Hubs are already open in a number of places across the city.

Cardiff council cabinet member Lynda Thorne said: "The focus of our wellbeing hubs will be to engage our increasing older population and help combat the impact of isolation on people’s wellbeing by providing a range of services, events and activities based on their needs.

"While there is a focus on older people, the hubs will serve the whole community".

Funding has been secured from the Welsh Government to transform the buildings and both will have extensions and internal refurbishments.

In Rhydypennau, an extension will be built to create a community room while there will also be an improved entrance, refurbishment, accessible parking and landscaping.

Planned improvements for Whitchurch's library include an extension to accommodate a community room, reinstatement of the original entrance and internal refurbishment including accessible toilets.

The new hubs will offer a wide range of community and wellbeing services.

There will also be activities and events planned with local groups.

In the meantime, Cardiff Council says plans "are taking shape" for alternative venues to provide a range of services during the closure period including the collection of waste bags, the mobile library service and continued community activities. Further information will be available shortly.
