Two car crash at busy junction left Ayr road shut for hours

Emergency services raced to the scene of a two-car smash at a busy junction which left the road shut for hours.

The smash at the Hunters Avenue and Heathfield Road traffic lights, near Heathfield Primary school in Ayr, was said to have happened at 5pm on Monday night.

The crash, thought to have been between a black Vauxhall Corsa Design and a silver four-year-old Mercedes C Class AMG Sport, left the road shut for over four hours as firefighters and police dealt with the scene.

One driver said four firefighters attended to the black Corsa and the crash “looked horrendous”.

And a resident said an ambulance remained on the scene for hours.

Gemma Sian Ruzzak said: “We got stuck about 5.15pm.

“It looked like a head on collision.

“Firefighters were there along with police. It looked really serious.”

Jonathon O’Keefe said: “I passed it at about 5.30pm and they were still trying to deal with it.

“There were four firefighters in the black car at that time still.

“It looked horrendous.”

Natalie James said: “It didn’t look good to be honest.

“I live really close and didn’t hear it, which is strange, but there were a lot of emergency services there for quite some time.”

A dog walker who lives nearby added: “I took the dog out about 9pm and the road was still closed off.

“There was a Mercedes, which was pretty badly smashed up, at the traffic lights at Hunters Avenue heading on to Adamton Road for Prestwick.

“And the black car was in bits.

“I don’t know what’s happened but I hope everyone is okay.”

There were huge tailbacks as drivers were redirected.

Access from the busy main Prestwick Road was shut off with local access only.

And traffic coming from the Asda side of Heathfield Road was diverted via East Road.

Police Scotland have been contacted.
