Two cafés in Bristol city centre close permanently

Two speciality coffee shops in Bristol city centre have closed permanently.

The Department of Coffee and Social Affairs (DOCASA) opened in Quakers Friars in 2017 and proved to be a popular addition to Bristol Shopping Quarter.

It became the brand's first café to open outside London, where it had 12 branches at the time having been founded in 2010.

In 2018 DOCSA purchased two independent Bristol cafés - Tradewind Espresso on Blackboy Hill in Clifton and The Crazy Fox in The Arcade, Broadmead - however both continued trading with their established names after the acquisition.

But three years after opening in Bristol, The Department of Coffee and Social Affairs is "permanently closed" according to Google, while the Crazy Fox is up for sale through estate agents Carter Jonas.

Tradewind Espresso has continued trading as normal and is currently open.

In July 2020 Big Hospitality reported that DOCSA entered liquidation, affecting 20 units operating under the flagship brand.

The article states the group underwent an "aggressive expansion streak" in 2019 which saw it acquire "scores of rivals across the UK in group deals and pre-pack administrations".

Bristol Live has contacted DOCSA, which also has branches in the USA, for comment but has not had a response.

The company has not shared an official statement about the Bristol café on its social media pages.

There is a notice on the door of the shop which states: "For the safety and precaution of our community, our coffee shop will be closed until further notice.

"We look forward to reopening soon, but in the meantime stay safe and looking after each other."

A Carter Jonas spokesperson said there has been a "large number of enquiries" for the unit in the Arcade previously home to Crazy Fox since the company received "instructions from the landlords to seek a new tenant".
