Two Brit cousins, aged 13 and 15, die after horror parasailing accident in Rhodes

Two British teenage cousins have been killed in a horror parasailing accident on the island of Rhodes, the Greek coastguard has said.

The trio, including two brothers, aged 15 and 13, and their 15-year-old female cousin, were being towed when a rope holding their parasailing parachute snapped, the Greek coastguard said.

A 13-year-old boy and the 15-year-old girl were killed while the surviving boy is in a "serious condition with multiple injuries" in a hospital in Rhodes.

The tragic pair, who it was initially reported were brother and sister before the coastguard clarification, were "found dead on the rocks" after being swept away by strong winds while the third teen was reportedly found on a rocky area nearby.

The trio had been parasailing in a coastal area believed to be off the fishing village of Lindos, in south east Rhodes, it is reported.

The Greek coastguard said: "A 13-year-old girl and a young man of 15 were found dead on the rocks near the city of Lindos in Rhodes."

A source has told the Sun: "It was a horrific accident. Three of them were all up in the sky at an extremely high altitude, around 400 to 500ft, when the rope attached to their parachute and the speedboat snapped.

"It clearly wasn't strong enough to be pulling all three of them at the same time.

"Strong winds carried them across the sky and moments later they smashed into a cliff-face on the beach.

"All of them were parasailing at the same time but it is illegal for three to be doing it at once."

Etaktanea reports the two boys and girl are all siblings and were being towed in their parachute behind a speedboat.

It appears the connecting rope has snapped, possibly due to strong winds, and two of the teens were carried by the wind onto the rocks, where they died instantly.

The authorities said the third sibling was taken to hospital after being picked up by fire and rescue crews and is fighting for life with multiple injuries.

It is believed the youngsters are members of the same family who were on holiday in the area of Pefki, which neighbours Lindos.

An investigation has been opened into the horror accident with the boat's captain, co-captain and the company owner being questioned by police, the coastguard said.

Etaktanea reports local restrictions prohibit parasailing rides of three or more people.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of two British people following their death in Rhodes, and are in contact with the Greek authorities."
