Two Bristol MPs sign letter urging Jeremy Corbyn to demand public vote in Brexit talks

Two Bristol MPs have put their names to a letter urging Jeremy Corbyn to demand the promise of a public vote on any Brexit deal from Theresa May.

Bristol North West MP Darren Jones and Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy were among 80 signatories of the Love Socialism Hate Brexit campaign letter pressing for a further public vote.

In the letter the MPs told the Labour leader that a referendum was their “bottom line”.

Both the Tory and Labour leaders have agreed to try and work together to strike a deal to break the deadlock.

They need a joint declaration to put before the EU’s 27 leaders in advance of the Brussels summit on Wednesday.

Talks stalled on Friday but the two negotiating teams hope to get them restarted on Monday.

In a video message posted on Sunday, Mrs May said she could not see MPs accepting her deal "as things stand" and that getting a deal through Parliament would require "compromise on both sides".

According to the Mirror Mr Corbyn has said he wants a permanent customs union and single market access tagged onto any deal.

He said: “We’ve set all that out. I haven’t noticed any great change in the Government’s position so far. I’m waiting to see the red lines move.”

Bristol MP helped stop no-deal Brexit – and he wasn't even in Parliament

“We will do everything we can to make sure there is no crashing out with no deal. That would be damaging for jobs. I believe something will happen this week to prevent that.”

A guarantee of a second referendum would be too much for Mrs May and even Mr Corbyn is lukewarm on the idea.

But now a third of MPs from his own party have made it clear that they will not support any deal without a public vote.

It says: “The only way to guarantee jobs, rights and protections – and Labour ’s reputation with its membership and the electorate – is to support a confirmatory public vote.

“Any compromise deal agreed by Parliament will have no legitimacy if it is not confirmed by the public.”

But Labour is deeply split on the issue, with 25 other Labour MPs sending their own letter to Mr Corbyn asking him to rule out another referendum.

The UK is due to leave the EU on Friday, April 12 and, as yet, no withdrawal deal has been approved by the House of Commons.

This week Mrs May is to ask Brussels for an extension to 30 June, with the possibility of an earlier departure if a deal is agreed.
