Two boys left with serious injuries after discarded box of fireworks explodes in Saughton Park

Two youngsters are receiving treatment in Sick Kids after they were badly injured by a discarded box of fireworks which exploded.

The boys, aged 12 and 13, were 'seriously injured' after the incident on Saturday morning at Saughton Park.

The pair are understood to have picked up a box of discarded fireworks they had found in the park which then exploded, leaving them with injuries to their hands.

Police and an ambulance were called after the pair returned home, and medics rushed them both to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Sciennes.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Officers were called to an address on Saughton Mains Terrace around midday following reports of children being injured by fireworks.

“A 12 and 13-year-old have been taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh.”

It follows a number of incidents in the city over the weekend relating to Bonfire Night, including reports that firefighters were forced to dodge a missile attack by reckless yobs.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in Edinburgh branded attacks on police and firefighters with bricks and fireworks 'disgraceful'.

The fire and rescue service have said they are "appalled" after one of their crews were subject to the assault while attending a bonfire.

After heading to the blaze opposite Danderhall Crescent, missiles were thrown at the firefighters as well as their vehicle. A police investigation is underway.

The incidents has led to increased calls for tougher restrictions on the sale of fireworks from locals and politicians.

The Scottish Government had previously set out plans to introduce tough new rules covering the private sale of fireworks which could be put in place for next year.
