Two bodies found in river after canoeists get into trouble

Police have found two bodies in the search for canoeists who capsized in a river in Bedfordshire. Emergency services responded to reports of canoeists in distress on the Great Ouse near Kempston on Sunday.

Witnesses saw two overturned canoes and a woman in trouble. Bedfordshire Police were called to the scene at a weir on the Great Ouse.

The police have confirmed that, after searching the river, two bodies were tragically found. A spokesperson said: "Members of the public may have noticed an emergency services presence at the Weir embankment in Water Lane, Kempston this morning, following reports received at around 10:50 am of two capsized canoes and a possible female in difficulties.

"Officers, in collaboration with Beds Fire and Rescue teams and the EEAST Ambulance Service, conducted a search of the river and unfortunately, two deceased individuals were discovered."

The bodies have been retrieved and the Bedfordshire Coroner has been notified. Formal identification has not been made yet, and police continue their efforts to establish the identities.

There will be a police presence in the area as investigations continue, and the public are urged to avoid the Weir embankment / Water Lane area if possible during further enquiries. The police expressed their condolences, stating: "Our thoughts are with those affected by these tragic circumstances."
