Two bike-borne Maoists from Chhattisgarh were arrested and explosive materials were seized from their possession by the Burgampad police during a vehicle checking drive at the bridge across the Godavari near Sarapaka on Wednesday morning, police said.
The two arrested persons were identified as Hemla Gangi, 22, and Savalam Nagesh, 23, members of the CPI (Maoist) Pamedu Local Organising Squad (LOS), hailing from Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district.
On noticing the police near the bridge, the bike-borne duo tried to speed away but the alert cops apprehended them after a brief chase.
They were carrying a bag containing explosive substances on the bike when intercepted by the police. The bag contained 30 gelatin sticks, 24 detonators and two bundles of cordex wire. Rs 31,500 in cash was also recovered from their possession, police added.
According to the police, they were carrying the explosive materials at the behest of some senior Maoist leaders to hide them somewhere in the forest area to carry out disruptive activities.
Police further said the arrested persons took part in the tactical counter-offensive campaign (TCOC) programme along with other Maoist cadres held near Rasapalli and Yerrapalli area in the first week of this month.
The Maoist rebels allegedly hatched a plan to set ablaze vehicles deployed for trench works in the Kistarampadu-Bathinapalli forest area in Charla mandal, where an exchange of fire took place between the police and Maoists last week.
