Murder charge laid over 2006 disappearance of Christopher Jarvis

A man has been charged with murder following a cold case probe into the 2006 disappearance of Wangoom man Christopher Jarvis.

A 59-year-old man will face court this afternoon charged with one count of murder.

A 70-year-old man from Wangoom was also arrested and remains in custody.

Mr Jarvis, 38, was last seen when he left the house he shared with his partner and stepchildren on Warrne Road in Wangoom at about 6am on Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

He failed to turn up to work and he has not been seen since.

At around 8am Mr Jarvis's car – a silver 1991 Ford station wagon – was found on fire at Thunder Point, a popular coastal lookout in Warrnambool.

The investigation was originally handled by the local police as a missing person and he was thought to have died by suicide.

However, the cold case was reopened almost two decades on after new information was provided from the public to the Missing Persons Squad.

Police looked into it and suspected Mr Jarvis was met with foul play and that other people were involved in his disappearance.

'Wouldn't let it go'

Mr Jarvis's nephew Jade McLaren said his family never stopped searching for answers.

"All I've wanted is some kind of resolution for my family," he said.

"We're overjoyed that the police have made arrests so quickly.

"The whole thing never sat well with us — it wasn't consistent with the man we knew.

"We wouldn't let it go.

"We're looking forward to speaking with police."

Anyone with further information about Mr Jarvis's disappearance is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 300 000 or submit a confidential report.
