Police confirm motorcyclist killed in horror A1 smash and two arrested over death

A fatal collision last night on the A1 Northbound near Denton Burn in Gateshead has sadly claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

Police have confirmed that the driver of a red motorcycle died at the scene of the incident after the collision with a small hatchback car.

The car stopped at first but then drove off from the scene with damage sustained to the front end of the vehicle, according to the force.

A 36 year-old man and a 28 year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in police custody.

Police are now appealing for witnesses of the incident to come forward with any information into what happened.

The A1 Northbound between J73-J75 was shut at around 9pm and remained closed throughout the night.

It re-opened just before 6am this morning after investigation work into the crash was completed by police.

We received this statement from Northumbria Police:

"Police are appealing for information following a fatal collision on the A1 on Friday, September 24.

At around 8.50pm police received a report of a collision on the A1 Northbound just prior to junction 75 (A69 junction) involving a dark coloured small hatchback car, a red motorcycle and a white Range Rover.

Officers and ambulance crew attended the scene but sadly the rider of the motorcycle died. The dark coloured small hatchback which collided with the motorcycle initially stopped but then drove off from the scene in the direction of the West Road. It is believed that the vehicle sustained front end damage as a result of the collision.

The family of the motorcycle rider are being supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers from Northumbria Police.

A 36 year-old man and a 28 year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in police custody at this time.

The A1 northbound remained closed until 5:40am this morning for scene investigation by Northumbria Police and diversions were put in place.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling in the area at the time and witnessed the collision or witnessed a vehicle matching this description or has dashcam footage, which can be submitted via the Tell Us Something pages on the Northumbria Police website. Alternatively contact 101 quoting reference 1085 24/09/21.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

“We were called this evening to a serious road traffic collision on A1 north near Denton Burn between a motorcyclist and another vehicle. We sent an ambulance, a specialist paramedic and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service to the scene.”
