Two arrested in protests outside Celtic Park as police clamp down on disorder

Two people have been arrested outside Celtic Park after protests following the side's draw with St Johnstone.

Fans collected outside the stadium after Sunday's game to call for the removal of Celtic manager Neil Lennon a week after the club condemned another gathering as supporters vented their fury at elimination from the Betfred Cup at the hands of Ross County.

The Hoops have won just twice in their last 12 games, exiting the Europa League with the most group stage goals conceded in the competition and slipped 13 points behind Glasgow rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership following their 4-0 win in Dingwall.

The club erected perimeter fencing around the stadium and beefed up security with dozens of police officers on hand to keep the peace ahead of Sunday's fixture.

But that did not deter some supporters from arriving after the final whistle, with two men arrested in connection with 'disorder offences'.

Police said scenes of protest were barred under the current level four coronavirus restrictions in the city.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Two men have been arrested in connection with disorder offences outside Celtic FC stadium in Glasgow.

“The Scottish Government regulations are quite clear that these types of protest are prohibited in areas under Level four restrictions.

“Our response has been measured and proportionate today."

The spokesman added: “We will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and encourage compliance, using enforcement as a last resort.”
